Nice. I used to draw houses a lot, except floor plans, for ones I dreamt of building. One of my relatives loved one of my kitchen floor plans so much, it became a base for their own remodeling. I never quite envisioned the exteriors though. The interiors were always so much more important to me, because that's where I lived most of my life -- so much more in looking in, than out looking in.
well put. ...I love thinking up little houses. I have dreams about quaint little houses. For a while there, I was obsessed with trying to create the "perfect" little house/church (or abbey) combination. Merging workspace and living space intrigues me. Here's a fun art fact.... Michelangelo kept his horse in a special attached "garage" type enclosure that he could access directly into, rather than a a separate stable or barn. He was sometimes seen riding it in the dead of night, and even bareback in the pouring rain in the wee hours in the night. He was very attached to his horse "Jupiter." He made numerous statues of him.
Did not know that about Michel. Interesting, and also interesting is that New England farmhouses were built with attached barns for the same reason. Or maybe not exactly the same; 18th century New Englanders didn't want to face the January winds in their nightshirts of an early morning, just because the chickens needed feeding. I meant to say earlier, I considered and decided you really can't be classified as 'average' in terms of your artwork. You have considerable skill and vision really.
You know that is one of the nicest compliments I've ever received. Coming from you especially. Looking at your work has me realizing that your level of skill is about as good as it gets.I really do mean that. Your skill level blows me away. I could only hope to reach such a level. Thank-you Katie for being a friend....and for being an artist-friend. You ARE an artist, through and through. Sorry about the assinine familiarity-contempt comment too. I'm a bit out of it tonight....I have a tooth that I had work done on killing me tonight. Oh...and I'm glad you are watching the Self-Portrait thingie. It all started with a conversation my friend ZenowaR and I had the other day. One thing led to another, and we were challenging one another to get a self-portrait done. Then I featured hers in my journal, and then out of the blue, that Egyptian lady presented me with hers! After that I thought to feature it also. As of now I think I've got 4 or five. I'm keeping the feature in my journal indefinitely now....or at least for a good long while. People LOVE to see someone else showcase their work. And I love showcasing others work too....no matter the skill level. It's ALL great art to me. Thanks again for the enormous compliment you gave me.
Goodness, when you called your own work 'average" or maybe not quite, I just took a closer look to see if maybe you were right on a grand scale, you know? And decided you weren't, is all. The intricacies you achieve, for example on your houses and that mission drawing--I couldn't do it, maybe I could squeak something by with a reference photo and it would give me a headache to last a lifetime. Don't you think, after a certain point you can't really stratify art anyway? Within certain spheres you can judge for 'quality' but very often excellent art comes from unschooled hands. Some 15 year old here might put out a little drawing that is more captivating in its impact than an Old master might be---here's a couple things I really really like along those lines: [link] [link]
Oh, and not to worry about the 'familiarity breeds contempt' remark, it's a time-honored adage and it's very often true, hence our stellar divorce rate Besides that, I like a little verbal ping pong myself, in the absence of malice. You don't need to agree with every clever thing I regale you with-!
Thanks for showing me those links. It's images like those that hit ya right in the heart. In a good way tho. Anyway....it's a new day, and a new year....so we will see if there's anything above average in store for us, starting from the present moment. The only rule I'll commit to is that there are no rules. And I feel privileged to be able to share views with you, and find myself looking forward to what you have to say each time we talk.....anyway....I've got a floral I'm working on that has been a pain in the a**!....but I think I've saved it from the brink. It started as a watercolor, but the paper I used was very absorbent , and it turned dark very quickly....so to save it, I turned it into an acrylic. Don't get your hopes up tho...Florals are never as easy to do as one might think. TTYL!
